You’re Not Alone

It’s understandable to feel isolated following an amputation. Everyone’s experience is unique, but we encourage you to remember you’re not alone. Your friends and family may be unsure how they can best help you, and you may feel isolated following a diagnosis or surgical procedure. Don’t be afraid to reach out and let your network know what you need from them. Support is available in various settings, including in-person and online support groups where you will meet other new amputees in your physical rehabilitation, which can be an excellent opportunity to provide and receive peer support.

Taking Ownership of Your Care is Vital

Choose a team of providers you feel comfortable working with. In addition to your doctor, you’ll have therapists, prosthetists, and other caregivers as a part of your health network. Ensure your care team understands your goals and remember that you can always adjust your plans. It’s essential to follow instructions from your providers, but never hesitate to ask questions about any aspect of your care. You have more invested in your health than anyone else, so you must take an active role in how you manage your healthcare.

Learning to Use a Prosthesis Takes Time

Every prosthesis is custom-made for the person wearing it. At Durrett’s Orthotics & Prosthetics, our prosthetists will work with you to design a prosthesis that meets your needs and goals. We remind our patients that receiving their prosthetic limb is a significant milestone but not the end goal. Many people find themselves disappointed when they aren’t able to immediately return to their former lifestyle upon getting their prosthetic limb. Engaging in activities with a prosthesis is a learning process with the end goal of returning to the work and hobbies you enjoy as independently as possible.

Motivation Matters

If your function will be improved with a prosthesis, you are a candidate for a prosthetic device, but your motivation to succeed makes a big difference. Your care team is committed to getting you on the road to recovery, but you must find ways to keep as invested in your success even when things can feel overwhelming or difficult. Set goals for yourself and reward yourself for meeting milestones on your path. This will help you keep working toward something tangible even in difficult moments.
