Our Prosthetics Care Guide for Summer

Durrett's Orthotic & Prosthetic Services • July 13, 2026

People who use prosthetics know how challenging summer weather can be for these devices. Longer days outside mean more wear, and warmer temperatures and humidity alter how the skin and socket interact. Our experts at Durrett's Orthotics & Prosthetics recognize those obstacles and have advice to help you stay active — without sacrificing comfort.

Why Does Heat Affect Prosthetics Care?

Higher temperatures push your body to sweat more, and that extra moisture can lead to skin irritation, odor, or a looser fit. Because residual limb skin is sensitive, trapped sweat can cause rashes or breakdown faster than you'd expect.

Check your skin every morning and night, looking for redness, tenderness, or warm spots. Catching irritation early is easier than treating it after the pain starts.

Summer Prosthetics Maintenance: How Often to Clean Your Liner and Limb

Bacteria multiply quickly in warm, damp conditions, so a clean liner matters more in summer than in any other season. Wipe it down daily with a mild, fragrance-free soap, then let it air dry fully before putting it back on. Skip harsh chemicals, as they break down silicone and gel over time, shortening your liner's lifespan.

If you're hiking, swimming, or working in the yard, clean your liner twice a day instead of once. A cleaner socket interface means less friction, fewer sores, and a device that performs as it should.

Cleaning your limb during the summer needs the same attention to detail. Wash it nightly with gentle soap and warm water, then pat dry. Let it dry fully before reapplying your liner, as trapping moisture underneath is a fast track to irritation.

Managing Sweat and Fit

Antiperspirant sprays made for residual limbs reduce moisture without clogging pores the way regular deodorant can. Moisture-wicking liner socks are another option, pulling sweat away from your skin while helping your socks stay secure throughout the day. Some of our clients rotate between two liners to help with prosthetic care: one is always drying, which keeps bacteria from building up.

Tracking Volume Changes

Fluid retention shifts with heat, and many people notice their limb volume changing more in the summer compared to other seasons. A socket that fits fine in the morning might feel loose or tight by afternoon, depending on your activity and the outdoor temperature.

Pay attention to these shifts, and adjust with extra socks or liner changes when needed. If the swings become frequent or severe, talk to your prosthetist instead of trying to fix it yourself, since a poorly fitting socket can damage your skin.

Prosthetics Care Around Water

Not every prosthetic is built to handle water. Ask your provider whether your device is water-resistant before you dive in; if it isn't, ask about a swim-specific prosthetic built for wet conditions. Rinse off chlorine or saltwater as soon as you're done swimming, since both can corrode metal parts or wear down materials.

Schedule Prosthetics Maintenance Before Summer Gets Busy

More activity means more wear on hardware, padding, and alignment, so a check-up before the season ramps up can save you from bigger problems later. Book a visit with your prosthetist early, and again mid-summer if you're especially active. Routine prosthetic maintenance catches loose parts and worn padding before they sideline you from the things you want to do.
