Orthotics, also known as braces, help to support the body’s muscles and bones while a person is mobile. Many people believe an orthotic is used specifically for the foot, but various orthoses treat chronic pain and assist in recovery following an injury or surgery. An orthosis can enhance function, improve balance, and reduce fatigue. The Durrett’s Orthotics & Prosthetics team can help you understand the different types of orthotics and what conditions they treat.

Spinal Orthoses
Spinal orthotics support the spine and are frequently used for patients with scoliosis and herniated discs. A spinal orthotic is also helpful for those with chronic nerve impingement; it can lessen symptoms and improve mobility.
Foot Orthoses
Foot orthoses include bracing, corrective shoes, insoles, and other support the foot's structure while walking. Improving a person’s gait by evenly distributing weight and pressure can relieve knee, hip, and lower back pain. An orthotic for the foot can treat plantar fasciitis, arthritis, overpronation, and heel pain.
Ankle-Foot Orthoses (AFO)
Covering the lower leg, ankle, and foot, an AFO increases stability for weak muscles and joints, including the knee. An AFO can also help prevent muscle contractures in the calf. Ankle-foot orthoses can treat a wide range of conditions:
- Cerebral Palsy
- Stroke
- Idiopathic toe walking
- Muscular Dystrophy
- Nerve damage
Knee Orthotics
Knee braces are one of the most commonly seen orthotics because knees do a lot of work, making them susceptible to many conditions and injuries. People who have severe osteoarthritis, ligamentous injuries, or have recently had surgery can benefit from a knee brace. There are several types of knee orthoses, including:
- Post-operative
- Unloaders
- ACL
- Neoprene sleeves
- Patella stabilizers
- Knee immobilizers
Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthotics (KAFO)
Also known as KAFO, a knee-ankle-foot orthotic is similar to an AFO but extends coverage to include the knee joint. KAFOs are usually made of plastic or lightweight carbon fiber to provide the necessary support without being too heavy. A knee-ankle-foot brace helps reduce excessive joint motion to provide stability and pain relief. A KAFO can treat severe muscle weakness or nerve damage following a head or spinal injury or a stroke.
Wrist and Hand Orthotics (WHO)
Many people who experience pain in their hands or wrists get significant relief by wearing a WHO. This orthotic covers the forearm and a portion of the palm. A WHO supports muscles and limits the motion of the wrist without immobilizing the fingers. This allows a person to experience pain relief while still engaging in therapeutic activities that can restore a healthy range of motion.
